Common MISTAKES New Bloggers Make (+ FREE Blogging Milestone Checklist)

They say practice makes perfect, right?

It’s obvious that nobody gets blogging down pat the moment they post their first article. It takes a lot of trial and error to grow a blog from the ground up, and, as with anything, you gotta start somewhere.

That being said, there are a lot of mistakes that are consistent with newer bloggers. After a while, it feels sort of stupid that we even did them in the first place,* but it’s not anything to be embarrassed by. Blogging is definitely a learning process. That’s why we like to help each other out when we can.

So today I’d like to point out a few mistakes new bloggers typically make when they’re getting started and how to turn those flaws into growth!

Answering Your Questions — 6-MONTH BLOGIVERSARY (+ Exciting News!!)

It’s my 6-month blogiversary!!!

On July 1st, I celebrated a full six months of When Words Fly! It truly was a great day of looking back and dreaming about the future.

After totally forgetting for a few hours,* I celebrated by binging recent Ninjago episodes, reading journal entries, and freaking out over a few special people with special birthdays (shoutout to my girl Annie Cate, SHES 15 NOW WHAAA??)

Today, though, we’re going to be answering the Q&A questions you submitted a few weeks ago. We also have a bunch of virtual (aka imaginary**) potatoes and confetti and cake, so get comfy! LET’S GET THIS PARTY STARTED!!

What Makes Blogging SO HARD (But It’s Fun Anyway Wohoo!) [Collab w/ Em @ 2G2M]

A few weeks ago, Em @ 2G2M asked me to do a collab with her. I was super hooped – her blog is so helpful and cute ahhh!! – and obviously I screamed ‘YES’.

We decided to post about the pros and cons of blogging. I volunteered for the bad, because who can pass up an excuse to rant about how awful their life is??

Wait, that’s not what the title says I’m doing?

Oh. Okay.

Honestly, I was kind of stumped at the idea of talking about the cons of blogging.* It’s become a staple in my life, one of the first things I think of when I’m asked what I like to do.

But it can’t all be glitter and French fries, can it? There are definitely some struggles with keeping up a blog. That’s why we’re going to be talking about the hard things about blogging — because, sometimes, everybody struggles with the same things and all we can do is laugh and help each other out whenever we can.

*i wasn’t sure if i was going to be super sarcastic with this post or not??? i love blogging too much to outright hate on it lol

How To Find Blogging & Writing Inspiration – Turning Real Life Into Brilliant Ideas!

The most commonly asked question to authors and bloggers is ‘Where do you find your inspiration?’

I have always answered something along the lines of ‘I don’t know, everywhere,‘ or ‘the world around me.’ But I know my readers. You expect more than that lame cop-out answer, don’t you? You certainly deserve more than that.

With April’s Camp Nanowrimo sneaking around the corner, a lot of us writers are scrambling for that perfect idea, or just an idea in general.* And not to mention, planning for all those days you need to schedule posts while you’re writing…

Don’t freak out! Sure, it’s a lot we’re about to dive into this month, but you can come up with awesome ideas before April 1st, both for your blog posts and your novel. Don’t believe me?

You can, and you will.

*you know, because i have no clue what i’m doing 99% of the time

We live in the age of the world-wide-web, where you can meet a dozen new people a day if you want. You can get in touch with people who share your interests and even with people who live on the other side of the planet.

And, especially as bloggers, we have to introduce ourselves so. many. times.

First impressions are important. It’s like a sales pitch for yourself AND your writing. You only have several moments to introduce yourself to your audience, and it may factor in whether they leave or stay. It could mean a world of difference to your stats or sales.

So, what exactly makes a great bio?

A few weeks ago, I emailed my subbies (you can be one here, by the way) and asked a bunch of questions, to which they gracefully answered. THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH. Your answers are priceless and have given me fantastic references to build upon.

I don’t wanna spoil too much, but a few things will be changing – graphics, posting time, post length…. lots of other great stuff I’m going to keep to myself. Heh heh.
