risks we #RESPECT in YA fiction // collab with olivia @ purely olivia

As a writer and bookworm, I read books with an eye for style, creativity, and risk.

Though some say reading judgementally isn’t enjoyable, I think it’s awesome to take an educated approach to the stories we read. As a writer, it’s something to embrace even more, right? If we see another author make a mistake, we can avoid those pitfalls in our own books. It’s kinda how learning works!

One of my favorite things to find in a book is an author not only being a good writer, but being a RiSkY one. I love an author that isn’t afraid to break some rules, pave new paths, and be a general writing BOSS. Plus, watching other authors try new things is so inspiring! Because they could fail. They could flop and get bad reviews and be thrown into the fire to be kindling.

For that reason, we gotta #respect the risks taken by authors, especially in a genre so competitive and crazy as YA. There are some particular risks, though, I really enjoy reading, so I contacted Olivia @ Purely Olivia to ask if she would collaborate with me. And here we are today tackling twelve risks we adore from our favorite YA authors. 🤗 I’m taking six while Olivia reviews the next set of six, so don’t miss out on her post!

how to own MORE books for LESS money // + our very first giveaway!!!

We bookdragons love the library.

Why wouldn’t we? I mean, it’s an incredible selection of books for absolutely no cost (unless, you know, you don’t turn it in on time). Seems like the perfect deal to me! I’ve even written a post about the glory of the library and why it should NEVER EVER DIE.

But, dream with me for a minute. Once in a while, we just really want a book that doesn’t have bent flaps or random scribbles or pages stained with unknown fluids. We want a book that is clean and beautiful and ALL OURS PLEASE. How cool would it be to have all those pretty books on one shelf??? cough @paperfury cough

Unfortunately, neither you nor I can spend all our money on these little paper treasure troves.* We need more than just the tears we cry after the death of our favorite characters to survive. So, logically, the only solution we have is to… get CHEAP OR FREE BOOKS.

But where, praytell, do we get these inexpensive books? Wellll, you can find all of that info right here, and maybe even win a free book of your own from our very first giveaway! LET’S GET STARTED, FRIENS.

Are Public Libraries Going EXTINCT?? // Pros & Cons Of Our Favorite Book Stop

I am in love with a place called the library.

Stepping into a library is like entering a new universe. It’s a place where books are respected and revered, where stories and imagination are encouraged. There’s a tense silence in the air that melts away when you open a book and get immersed in its world.

So I was surprised when I learned how few people actually like the library. Apparently, only 19% of Americans read for fun (and that number is dwindling). Is the library becoming extinct with the lack of readers and increase of digital reading? Why should we even have libraries around in 2018??

We’re going to decide together whether libraries are necessary to keep around as we examine the highs and lows of our favorite book temples. I present to you: the pros and cons of public libraries!

5 Ways HARRY POTTER Can Make Your Series Magical

Harry Potter. The bestselling book series of all time.

Over 500 million copies of these books have been sold. Every country of the world is home to at least one of its millions of fans. It truly is a gem in modern English literature.

I was absolutely entranced by this series from page one. It’s a beautiful story of a boy growing up and doing what’s right in a world that wants him dead. The movies were a work of art. If you haven’t read the books, I strongly recommend you give them a try. I’ve been converted to a fangirl.

One of my favorite things about Harry Potter is the fact that it’s a series. Seven whole books of magic and adventure and romance and HUFFLEPUFFS WOO!! But, more than that, I enjoy how effortlessly Rowling carries the story from book to book. After some research (aka excuses to re-read the books), I’ve discovered 5 ways to recreate that magic in your own book series!

By the way, this post is 99.999% spoiler free. I hate when people spoil books. They’re bookworm sinners. Subpar bookies. Slytherins.

12 Squeal-Worthy Books To Read Before Summer Ends

My favorite part about summer has to be the extra reading time.

What little bookworm can resist the thought of summer? Imagine it — there are now whole days free in your schedule where you can simply lie on the floor of your room, watching the rays of the summer sun reflect off your coffee mug and warm the off-white pages of the book in your hands. Summer.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get the summer I was expecting this year, and I didn’t get as many awesome free days as I’d hoped. Nevertheless, I picked up every book I could find and read all that I could. Summer’s almost over, but that doesn’t mean we can’t squeeze in a few last-minute reads.

If you’ve already finished your summer TBR list (or you didn’t make one in the first place, that’s okay too), I’ve compiled a list of 12 out-of-this-world books to read before we head back to school next month. And, in my not-so-humble opinion, these are some of the best books ever.

5 Reasons Why Fanfiction Is NOT A Waste Of Time (+ Never Before Seen Fanfic Snippets)

Call me unoriginal or immature, but I’m an absolute sucker for writing fanfiction and proud of it.

Unfortunately, fanfiction has been put down as a type of writing that doesn’t require any effort. It’s labeled as an embarrassing writing style where kids copy characters and plot from a big-time company without formal permission. Which has led to its being viewed as immature and irresponsible.

I can’t count how many times I’ve seen people criticize and make fun of fanfiction. Can you imagine the impact this has on younger kids who are only getting started writing and focus on fanfiction? They’re being told that their writing isn’t worth anything. It’s just a waste of time.

This makes me so. darn. sad. What if we’re robbing the world of a future bestseller or blogger or speaker? WE COULD BE DESTROYING THE HOPES AND DREAMS OF A FUTURE PRESIDENT.

That’s why, today, we’ll be discussing 5 reasons why fanfiction IS NOT a waste of time. In fact, it can improve your writing life!

I’ve also included a few fanfiction snippets that I thought would be entertaining to read! It was fun looking back at my archives and picking a few sections to share with you all. Obviously, they’re all Ninjago themed.* Who do you think I am?

* *clears throat* DISCLAIMER: i do not own any part of LEGO or Wilfilm companies. all characters shown here belong to those groups. the only things i’ve contributed are the ideas and words themselves.

5 Book Characters That Are #Me

I’m not one of those people who does tags all the time. I’d rather spend my one precious posting day a week ranting about something that moves me than 300 words of me talking mindlessly about myself.*

However. This post warranted an exception. Why?

BOOK CHARACTERS!!

I don’t know, something about this idea just made me super excited — comparing myself to book characters?? Pretending like they’re real for a few minutes??? YES SIR I’LL TAKE IT.

*one of these days i’m going to get to all the things i’ve been tagged for. don’t worry. i’ve got a google doc 😉
