what on earth is a BLOGGING VOICE?! // how to make your posts uniquely YOU!

Novice bloggers often worry about this little mystery called a writing voice. What is it, and, most importantly, how do you find it?

I was certainly one of them when I began (nearly one year ago, yeet). From years upon years of reading, I knew what a writing voice was, but it was a totally different thing to put it into practice. Was I supposed to be serious and write essay-like posts? Or should I be silly and have funny, relatable posts?? SO, I did both, but not simultaneously. Separately. And it was strange. don’t read my old posts i’m begging you.

I’d kind of forgotten how hard it was and hadn’t planned to write a post like this, but I was reminded by a certain comment that it was a topic I needed to address (thank you, Mary!) With a lot of work and getting comfortable in my own skin, I found my own writing style and voice that I love.. and that we’ll examine in depth in a little bit!

If you’ve been meaning to make your posts unique or find what makes your writing special, it’s time to sit back and talk about finding your writing voice. Let’s gooo!

write christmas 2018 // writing CONTEST and COLLAB with clara & co!

After NaNoWriMo, it’s kinda hard to regain that passion for writing.

You’ve spent 720 hours spilling your guts onto a page, brainstorming how the heck this book is gonna end, and finding spare moments to type away. I get it. It’s exhausting to write. And when it’s over you feel like taking a nap for the next thirty days. Or just hibernating through the winter. Whichever comes first.

That’s why me, Clara, and Charis started Write Christmas, a competition for all ages and stages of writing! The goal was to get people back to writing after NaNo and throw in a fun competition. It was so, so fun getting to read everyone’s amazing entries last year, and our participants had fun improving their skills and earning some bragging rights! 😉

I’m thrilled to announce the second annual Write Christmas competition! This year, Clara and I collaborated to bring you not one, but TWO chances at recapture that passion for creativity. And, this year, you have a chance at winning a $15 Amazon card! Let’s get to the details to get started 🤗

my writing ROLE MODELS // 10 kickbutt authors who are changing my writing

We’ve all got favorites.

Favorite shows, favorite foods, favorite books actually we cant make up our minds on that last one. But we can more or less agree on what makes a great writer. It takes a person with an eye for characters, themes, prose, and passion to write well.

While a lot of aspiring writers already have those qualities, some are more advanced than others. And that’s perfectly okay! Those of us earlier in our journeys have a bounty of writers that have come before us to admire and learn from.

Like many others, I have a group of authors who have been writing inspirations, be it through actual writing characteristics or simply encouragement they’ve given me. Unfortunately, I can’t thank each and every one of these writers — some are millionaires and some are, well, dead — but their work is well-loved by me and others.

Sooo, let’s count down my top 10 writing role models!

5 Ways HARRY POTTER Can Make Your Series Magical

Harry Potter. The bestselling book series of all time.

Over 500 million copies of these books have been sold. Every country of the world is home to at least one of its millions of fans. It truly is a gem in modern English literature.

I was absolutely entranced by this series from page one. It’s a beautiful story of a boy growing up and doing what’s right in a world that wants him dead. The movies were a work of art. If you haven’t read the books, I strongly recommend you give them a try. I’ve been converted to a fangirl.

One of my favorite things about Harry Potter is the fact that it’s a series. Seven whole books of magic and adventure and romance and HUFFLEPUFFS WOO!! But, more than that, I enjoy how effortlessly Rowling carries the story from book to book. After some research (aka excuses to re-read the books), I’ve discovered 5 ways to recreate that magic in your own book series!

By the way, this post is 99.999% spoiler free. I hate when people spoil books. They’re bookworm sinners. Subpar bookies. Slytherins.

3 Secrets To The Best School Year Ever™ (How I’m Owning College AND High School)

It’s almost Fall!

We’re so close, I’m already beginning to imagine it… raking leaves in the chilly autumn air. Salted Caramel flavored everything. S’mores and campfires and fuzzy jackets. And that means it’s time for…. a new school year!!!

*distant sobbing*

Yeah, I’m not even going to pretend I like school. I count it as something to be grateful for, sure, but it’s like the United States school system is trying to make us go insane.

I’ve been through this rodeo plenty of years now (tenth grade & dual enrolling in college, wohoo), and I can safely say that I’ve learned a thing or two about how to deal with the pressure without falling prey to a total identity crisis.*

*ok so maybe i have a mini identity crisis every now and again??? just a little one!!

Can’t Stop Won’t Stop (I’m Back!! + Photo Travel Diary)

*jumps out from behind a stack of books with potatoes and cowbells*

HI EVERYONE.

I’M BACK.

After my impromptu disappearance, I have returned!! And, even better… I’ve got the blogging bug again! A lot! Like, this hiatus thing might have worked too well, because I’ve been typing posts up like they’re nothing. So thank you for putting up with my absence. All of your comments were very sweet and very appreciated ❤

While I went on hiatus because of a tiny creative breakdown, I actually had a full vacation during this time away. And where else would this living Disney dictionary be than her favorite place on earth, Walt Disney World???

During our time there, I got a random surge of inspiration and wrote a poem about overworking myself and the recovery. It’s actually sort of good, so I decided to share it with you along with a few photos from my last day at Magic Kingdom.

Creativity & Its Worst Enemy Ever, Burnout (Also: I’m On Hiatus)

Some people see hiatuses as big no-nos.

I know the feeling well. Post views go down, followers stop filing in, and those oh-so-perfectly planned posts are left sitting unread in the draft folder. All the things we’re working for are kinda tossed out the window.

Well, I’m taking a hiatus. It’s pretty nervewracking, but, more than that, it’s badly needed.

I’ve been thinking a lot about productivity and what keeps people from accomplishing their goals lately, and creative burnout has been at the front of my mind. It’s this really stupid feeling of not being able to create anything for a variety of reasons. And I’ve caught the bug. *miffed look*

Burnout isn’t something talked enough about here on the blogosphere or anywhere in the writing world, really. It causes so much damage, but a lot of people don’t notice the pattern they’re going through: creativity rises and rises, falls dramatically, then rises again. A tiring loop, over and over.

So let’s be the ones to talk about it.
